The Mountain Man Memorial March is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in East Tennessee that honours America’s fallen servicemembers and supports their Gold Star Families. It began in 2007, when friends and the brother of U.S. Army 1st Lt. Frank B. Walkup IV carried his photograph 26.2 miles through the mountains above Gatlinburg after he was killed in action in Iraq. The organization runs the annual march each April and a golf scramble each October, and uses the proceeds to cover lodging for Gold Star Families attending the march, with scholarship endowments for the children of fallen servicemembers as its stated next goal.
