About this event

Eagle Expeditions are Team Red, White & Blue’s own multi-day guided outdoor trips, run at national level rather than by local chapters and led by volunteer veteran Expedition Guides trained in wilderness medicine. Team RWB is a 501(c)(3) veterans’ nonprofit whose membership is free and open to veterans, service members, military families and civilian supporters.

This expedition runs Thursday 21 January to Thursday 4 February 2027 — fifteen days including travel, built around an eleven-day, 110.5-mile unsupported backpacking route through Rakiura National Park on Stewart Island, off the southern tip of New Zealand’s South Island. Ten participants travel with two guides.

Applications closed on 1 September 2026, so this listing is for reference and for anyone tracking the next cycle. Prior backpacking and backcountry experience is required. The commitment is $3,000 in fundraising plus a $200 non-refundable deposit, with registration completed on the Classy platform after acceptance. Team RWB states that Eagle Expeditions are primarily for veterans and service members, though it does not publish that as a hard eligibility rule.

Team Red, White & Blue (Team RWB) is a 501(c)(3) veterans’ nonprofit founded in 2010 by Mike Erwin, a US Army officer, and describes itself as America’s health and wellness community for veterans. Its stated mission is to enrich the lives of military veterans through physical activity, social connection and community engagement. Membership is free and open to veterans, service members, military families and civilian supporters, who are known as Eagles; the organization reports more than 250,000 members and over 19,500 events a year, coordinated through local chapters and its own member app. At national level it runs multi-day guided Eagle Expeditions, monthly fitness missions, charity race-bib programmes with third-party races, and marquee flag relays — the Old Glory Relay from 2014 to 2024, the Old Glory Ultra Relay in 2025, and One Flag Forward in 2026. Its executive director is Col. (Ret.) Michael Sullivan.
